Obituary for Mary Haney Wilson

Mary Haney Wilson
Mary Haney Wilson, 92, of Stow, passed away in her sleep on Tuesday morning, September 6, 2016.

Born September 17, 1923 in Akron, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Louise Haney. She was married to Robert C. Wilson in 1945 until his death in 1999. She was also preceded in death by her brothers Thomas Haney and spouse Theresa of Akron, John Haney and spouse Alice of Doylestown, Paul Haney of High Rolls NM, and Kevin Haney of San Rafael CA, and her sister Betty Myers and spouse Jim of Baton Rouge LA.

She is survived by her ten children: Mary Reeve of Stow, John Wilson and spouse Patricia of Bath, Caroline Wilson of Kent, Catherine Sinay and spouse David of Rochester MI, Robert Wilson and spouse Camille of Kent, Anne Perrine and spouse Tom of Tulsa OK, Joseph Wilson and spouse Judy of North Olmstead, Helen Migchelbrink and spouse Richard of Fort Collins CO, Margaret Wilson of Cuyahoga Falls, and Thomas Wilson and spouse Fran of Mansfield, 21 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She is also survived by Jan Haney, widow of her brother Paul, and Badiha Haney, widow of her brother Kevin, her brother-in-law Phil Myers, and sister-in-law Dorothy Ann Wilson. Mary outlived her husband and his 11 brothers and sisters, but remains close to many nieces and nephews from both sides of the family.

Mary’s father came to Ohio from County Clare Ireland, and her mother from Mobile, Alabama. From her father she inherited her love of poetry and literature, and from her mother her love of music, and from both parents her lifelong Catholic faith. Although her father only went to school through the fifth grade in Ireland, all the Haney children were raised to value education. Her brothers Thomas, John, and Kevin all became lawyers, while her brother Paul was a journalist and “The Voice of the Astronauts” during the Gemini space program. Her sister Betty also graduated from college, studying physics. Mary graduated from Tallmadge High School at 16, Kent State University at 20, worked at Goodyear Aerospace during World War II, and, after raising 10 children, returned to school at Akron University and became a certified teacher. She then taught at Immaculate Conception School in Ravenna. After retiring from teaching, she travelled extensively with her husband Bob, driving all over the country to visit far flung members of their large extended families. Mary was also a faithful member of Holy Family Parish in Stow, serving as a lay reader for decades, right up until the end of her life. She was also a lifelong Cleveland sports fan from the days of Bob Feller to the Cavs’ impossible championship. We feel blessed that she got to see them win it all.

Mary was born 3 years after women were granted the right to vote. She was so excited to be able to cast her ballot for the first woman president.

There will be a Mass of Christian burial at Holy Family Catholic Church at 11:00 AM, on Friday. Calling hours are at the church prior to the service, 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made for the relief of victims of the recent flood in Louisiana, via “The Baton Rouge Area Foundation”.
